Common MacBook Problems and How to Fix Them (2026 Guide for MacBook Air & Pro)
Quick answer: What are the most common MacBook problems? The most common MacBook problems are display faults (black screen, lines, pink or yellow tint, flickering), a MacBook that won’t turn on or boot, freezing and crashes, fast battery drain, overheating, and keyboard or trackpad failures. Many software problems go away after a restart, a macOS update or Safe Mode. However, cracks, lines, liquid damage and dead batteries need a repair, which starts at ₹1,499 at Buzzmeeh with a free diagnosis.

MacBooks are reliable; however, they are not problem-free. After more than 10,000 MacBook repairs, our technicians see the same faults again and again: a MacBook Pro that shows a black screen, a MacBook Air with lines across the display, a laptop that freezes every afternoon, or a battery that dies at 30%.
The good news is that you can fix many MacBook problems yourself in a few minutes. In this guide, we group the most common issues by type. For each one, you’ll learn the signs, the checks you can try at home, and when it’s time for a professional repair, with Buzzmeeh’s current prices where a repair is needed.

Start here: 5 checks that fix many MacBook problems
Before you look at a specific problem, try these five checks. They are safe and cost nothing. In fact, they solve a large share of software faults.
- Restart properly. Choose Apple menu, then Restart. If the MacBook is frozen, hold the power button for 10 seconds until it turns off, then turn it on again.
- Update macOS. Open System Settings, go to General, then Software Update. Apple often fixes display, battery and crash bugs in updates.
- Start in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads only essential software, so it shows whether an app is causing the problem. On Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) MacBooks, shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select your disk, then hold Shift and choose “Continue in Safe Mode”. On Intel MacBooks, hold Shift while the MacBook starts.
- Reset NVRAM and SMC (Intel MacBooks). To reset NVRAM, turn on the MacBook and immediately hold Option, Command, P and R for about 20 seconds. The SMC controls power, battery and fans; its reset key combination varies by model. In contrast, Apple Silicon MacBooks don’t need these resets; simply shut down, wait 30 seconds and turn on again.
- Check storage and Activity Monitor. First, keep at least 10–15% of your storage free. Also, open Activity Monitor to find apps using too much CPU or memory, then quit them.
If the problem returns after these checks, or if you can see physical damage, move on to the matching section below.
MacBook screen and display problems
Display faults are the most common MacBook problems we repair, and they also make up the highest-volume searches. So, here is how to tell the difference between them.
Black screen on MacBook Pro or MacBook Air
First, press the brightness-up key; a screen at zero brightness looks dead. Next, shine a torch on the screen. If you see a faint image, the backlight has failed. Then connect an external monitor. If the external screen works, the fault sits in the MacBook’s display or its cable. On the other hand, if both stay black, the problem is likely on the logic board.
Lines on the MacBook screen
Vertical or horizontal lines, or a grey screen with lines, usually point to a damaged LCD or display cable. Therefore, software settings can’t fix them. If the lines change when you move the lid, the cable is the likely cause, and a cable repair costs less than a full screen. A black screen with coloured lines on a MacBook Pro, however, can also mean a graphics fault on the logic board.
Pink, yellow or green tint on a MacBook screen
First, rule out settings: turn off Night Shift and True Tone, then choose the default colour profile in System Settings under Displays. If the tint stays, the display or its cable is failing. Also, if the MacBook shows a pink screen and then restarts by itself, that is a system crash rather than a display fault, so treat it like a kernel panic (see below).
MacBook screen flickering or flashing
First, turn off automatic brightness and True Tone, then update macOS and test in Safe Mode. On 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, also try a fixed refresh rate instead of ProMotion. If the flicker happens in every app and even in Safe Mode, the display cable or panel needs a check.
MacBook Pro 2017 backlight issue (flexgate)
For example, many 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models from 2016 and 2017 suffer from flexgate. The thin display cables wear out from opening and closing the lid. At first, you see an uneven “stage light” glow at the bottom of the screen. Later, the backlight cuts out when you open the lid past a certain angle. Fortunately, flexgate repair at Buzzmeeh starts at ₹5,499, far less than a new display. Models from 2018 onwards use a longer cable, so flexgate is much less common on them.
Cracked screen or internal screen crack
Visible cracks, or black ink-like spots without a visible crack, mean the LCD has damage. Usually, this happens when the lid closes on an earphone or pen. Only a display replacement fixes it. For the full step-by-step guide, read how to fix a MacBook screen.
MacBook not turning on or not booting
MacBook won’t turn on
- First, connect the original charger for at least 15 minutes; a fully drained battery needs time.
- Then try a different power outlet, cable and adapter.
- Next, hold the power button for 10 seconds, release it, and press it again.
- Finally, check whether the keyboard backlight or fans come on. If they do, but the screen stays dark, see the black screen section above.
If nothing happens at all, the cause is usually the battery, the charging circuit or the logic board. Therefore, a diagnosis is the next step.
MacBook stuck on a white or grey screen, or the Apple logo
A MacBook Pro white screen with no Apple logo, or a progress bar that never finishes, usually means a startup problem in macOS. First, try Safe Mode. If that fails, start in macOS Recovery: on Apple Silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear and choose Options; on Intel, hold Command and R at startup. Then run Disk Utility, select your startup disk and click First Aid. As a last resort, you can reinstall macOS from Recovery, which keeps your files in most cases. Even so, back up first if you can.
MacBook freezing, crashing or kernel panic
In short, a kernel panic is a serious system crash. The MacBook restarts suddenly and shows a message that it restarted because of a problem. Occasional freezes usually come from an app, low storage or an outdated macOS. So, update macOS, remove recently installed apps, disconnect accessories and test in Safe Mode. However, if kernel panics happen several times a week, even in Safe Mode, the cause is often hardware, such as a failing SSD or a logic board fault.
MacBook battery and charging problems
To check your battery, open System Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Apple rates most MacBook batteries for around 1,000 charge cycles. Common battery problems include:
- Fast battery drain: first, check Battery settings for apps using high energy and lower the screen brightness.
- “Service Recommended” or shutdown at 20–30%: the battery has worn out, so it needs replacing. MacBook battery replacement at Buzzmeeh costs ₹2,499 to ₹8,999.
- Swollen battery: the trackpad stops clicking or the base lifts. Stop using the MacBook immediately, because a swollen battery is a safety risk.
- Not charging: try another adapter and cable first. If the MacBook only charges at an angle, the port is loose; charging port replacement starts at ₹1,499.
MacBook heating issue and loud fan noise
Indian summers, dust and long work sessions push MacBooks hard, so many of them run hot. A hot MacBook slows itself down to protect the chip, so overheating also shows up as lag and freezing. Try these fixes:
- Use the MacBook on a hard, flat surface, not on a bed or cushion, because fabric blocks the vents.
- Also, open Activity Monitor and quit apps or browser tabs that use high CPU.
- In addition, keep it out of direct sunlight and away from hot car seats.
- Update macOS, since some updates improve power management.
If an Intel MacBook or a MacBook Pro still runs hot with loud fans, dust has likely clogged the fan and the thermal paste has dried. A technician can clean the cooling system and replace the paste. In contrast, Apple Silicon MacBook Air models have no fan, so they rarely sound loud; instead, they slow down when hot.
MacBook keyboard and trackpad problems
If the keyboard and trackpad both stop working at once, restart first, because a software glitch is the usual cause. Then check for these common faults:
- Sticky or repeating keys: common on 2016–2019 MacBooks with the butterfly keyboard. Hold the MacBook at an angle and use compressed air between the keys. If keys still fail, MacBook keyboard replacement starts at ₹1,999.
- Trackpad won’t click: a swollen battery is often pushing the trackpad up from below, so we check the battery before any trackpad repair.
- Keys stopped after a spill: treat this as liquid damage (see below).
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and speaker problems
- Mac Wi-Fi not working: restart the router and MacBook, then forget the network and join it again. Also, disable any VPN, and check that the date and time are correct.
- Bluetooth not connecting: first, turn Bluetooth off and on, remove the device from the list and pair it again.
- No sound from MacBook speakers: check the output device in System Settings under Sound, raise the volume, and unplug headphones. If you hear crackling or nothing at all after these checks, the speakers may need a repair.
What to do if you spill liquid on your MacBook
- First, switch the MacBook off immediately and unplug the charger.
- Then turn it upside down in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the board.
- Don’t turn it on to check it, and don’t use a hair dryer or rice.
- Finally, get it inspected within 24 hours, because corrosion starts within hours.
Liquid damage repair at Buzzmeeh starts at ₹1,899 for cleaning and diagnosis.
Known problems by MacBook model
However, some MacBook problems affect specific models more than others. If you own one of these, watch for the early signs.
| Model | Known problem | Early sign |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro 13″ and 15″ (2016–2017) | Flexgate display cable wear | “Stage light” glow at the bottom of the screen |
| MacBook Air and Pro (2016–2019) | Butterfly keyboard failure | Sticky, repeating or dead keys |
| Retina MacBook Pro (various years) | Staingate (coating wear) | Patchy marks that don’t wipe off |
| MacBook Air M1 and newer | Internal screen cracks from lid pressure | Black ink-like spots with no visible crack |
| Older Intel MacBooks | Swollen batteries and overheating | Base lifting, loud fans, slow performance |
When should you get a professional repair?
Stop troubleshooting and book a diagnosis if you notice any of these:
- Cracks, lines, spots or a tint that stays in Safe Mode
- A swollen battery, or a burning smell
- Liquid spilled on the MacBook
- Kernel panics several times a week
- No power at all after you have tried another charger
Otherwise, continuing to use a faulty MacBook can turn a small repair into a logic board repair.

Frequently asked questions about MacBook problems
For questions about booking, payment and pickup, see our general FAQs.
What are the most common MacBook problems?
The most common MacBook problems are display faults, a MacBook that won’t turn on or boot, freezing and crashes, battery drain, overheating, and keyboard or trackpad failures. Many software issues go away after a restart, a macOS update or Safe Mode.
Why is my MacBook Pro screen black but it’s on?
Check the brightness first, then shine a torch on the screen. A faint image means the backlight has failed. If an external monitor works, the display or its cable needs repair; if not, the logic board may be at fault.
Why does my MacBook Pro have horizontal lines on the display?
Horizontal lines usually mean a damaged LCD or display cable. If the lines change when you move the lid, the cable is the likely cause. Cable repair at Buzzmeeh starts at ₹5,499.
Why is my MacBook screen pink or yellow?
First, turn off Night Shift and True Tone and reset the colour profile. If the tint stays, the display or cable is failing. A pink screen followed by a restart is a system crash, not a display fault.
What is the MacBook Pro 2017 backlight issue?
It is flexgate, a worn display cable on 2016–2017 MacBook Pro models. It causes a “stage light” glow at the bottom of the screen and later a dark screen when you open the lid wide. Repair at Buzzmeeh starts at ₹5,499.
Why does my MacBook keep freezing?
Freezing usually comes from an app, low storage, overheating or an outdated macOS. Update macOS, free up storage and test in Safe Mode. However, frequent kernel panics, even in Safe Mode, point to hardware.
What should I do if my MacBook won’t turn on?
First, charge it for 15 minutes with the original charger, try another outlet and adapter, then hold the power button for 10 seconds. If nothing happens, the battery, charging circuit or logic board needs a diagnosis.
Why is my MacBook heating up?
Heavy apps, blocked vents, dust and hot rooms cause most heating issues, so start with the basics. Use a hard surface, quit high-CPU apps in Activity Monitor and keep the MacBook out of the sun. Loud fans that don’t settle may need a cleaning.
How do I restart my MacBook in Safe Mode?
On Apple Silicon, shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select your disk, then hold Shift and choose “Continue in Safe Mode”. On Intel, hold Shift while the MacBook starts.
Is it worth repairing an old MacBook?
Usually yes, if the repair costs well under half the price of a newer model and the MacBook still gets macOS updates. A battery or charging port repair almost always makes sense.
