Signs of a broken display on a MacBook Pro

A broken display does not always mean shattered glass. In fact, many of the MacBook Pros we receive look perfect from the outside. These are the signs we see most often:

My MacBook Pro screen is broken: what to do first

The first ten minutes decide whether the damage stays small or spreads. So, follow these steps in order:

1. Stop pressing on the screen. Don’t push on cracks or ink spots to “test” them, because pressure makes them spread.
2. Remove anything trapped in the lid. Check for earphones, a pen or crumbs on the keyboard before you close it again.
3. Clean loose glass carefully. Use a soft dry cloth and keep fingers away from sharp edges.
4. Switch off if liquid was involved. Unplug the charger and don’t turn it back on. Liquid damage needs a check within 24 hours.
5. Take photos. They help with any insurance claim and with a quick quote on WhatsApp.
6. Back up your data. Use the methods in the next section before anyone opens the MacBook.

Also, avoid putting tape on the screen or trying a “screen fix” app. Neither will repair a damaged screen on a MacBook Pro, and tape can leave residue on the new display area.

How to save your data with a broken screen

A screen replacement does not touch your storage, so your files are normally safe. Even so, a backup protects you if the drop also hurt the logic board. Here are three ways to back up when you can’t see the display:

• Use an external monitor or TV. Connect it with a USB-C or HDMI cable. Then run a Time Machine backup to an external drive, or let iCloud finish syncing.
• Use Share Disk mode on Apple silicon (M1 and newer). With an external monitor connected, start up in macOS Recovery and choose Share Disk. Then connect to another Mac with a USB-C cable. The other Mac then sees your drive.
• Use Target Disk Mode on Intel models. Hold T while starting up, then connect to another Mac with a Thunderbolt cable.

Is it the screen, the cable or the board?

The external monitor test tells you a lot in one minute:

• External monitor works, MacBook screen doesn’t: the fault is in the display or its cable.
• External monitor also stays black: the logic board or power may be the problem. Our logic board repair team checks this first.
• Image changes when you move the lid: the display cable is the likely cause, especially on 2016–2017 models.

Therefore, it is worth getting a free diagnosis before you pay for a new screen. A full display isn’t always the answer.

13-inch Intel MacBook Pro (2012–2020)

These Retina screens crack easily at the corners after a drop. On 2018 and later models, the new display must support True Tone. So, we fit the correct assembly for your model.

2016–2017 MacBook Pro (A1706, A1707, A1708)

Before replacing the screen, we always test for flexgate. On these models, the display cable is short and wears out over time. As a result, a cable repair is often enough.

13-inch M1 and M2 MacBook Pro (A2338)

This is one of the most common damaged screens we see. Parts are usually in stock, so we often finish the repair the same day.

14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro to M4)

These use Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED displays with 120Hz ProMotion. They are very sensitive to pressure. For example, a keyboard cover or camera cover can crack the panel when the lid closes.

Can you keep using a MacBook Pro with a broken display?

For a few days, yes, with an external monitor in clamshell mode. Plug in the charger, an external keyboard and a monitor, then close the lid. However, we don’t recommend it for long, because:

• Cracks and ink spots usually spread within days or weeks.
• Loose glass can scratch the keyboard or cut fingers.
• A damaged panel can short and harm the display cable or logic board.

So, use it only until you can book the repair.

How to prevent a cracked MacBook Pro screen

• Never close the lid with anything on the keyboard, even a cable.
• Avoid thick keyboard covers and webcam covers on modern MacBook Pro models.
• Use a padded sleeve and keep heavy items away from the laptop in your bag.
• Open and close the lid from the centre, not from one corner.
• Don’t lift the MacBook Pro by the screen.
