How to find your MacBook model number

1. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. You’ll see the name and year, for example “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)”.
2. Or turn the MacBook over. The “Model A____” number is printed in small text near the hinge.

How much does it cost to fix a Mac screen? What changes the price

The biggest factor is which display your MacBook uses. Here’s what moves the price up or down:

• Display technology. 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros from 2021 onward use Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) panels with 120Hz ProMotion. These are the most expensive MacBook displays to replace. MacBook Air and 13-inch Pro Retina screens cost much less.
• Screen size. A 15-inch MacBook Air screen costs more than the 13-inch version of the same generation.
• Original-grade vs compatible display. Original-grade assemblies match Apple’s brightness and colour. Compatible panels cost less and suit older or budget-conscious users. We show you both prices before we start.
• Full assembly vs panel only. On most modern MacBooks the glass, panel and lid are bonded, so the full display assembly is replaced. That’s more reliable than peeling off broken glass.
• Extra damage from the fall. If the hinge, display cable or camera is also damaged, we tell you before doing any extra work — no surprise add-ons.

Signs your MacBook screen needs replacement

• Cracked, shattered or spider-webbed screen after a drop
• Black screen, but the MacBook still chimes, the keyboard lights up, or it works on an external monitor
• Vertical or horizontal lines, flickering, or a block of dead pixels
• Black or purple “ink” patches that spread every few days — the LCD layer is leaking
• Screen goes dark when you open the lid past a certain angle, or shows a “stage light” glow at the bottom (Flexgate on 2016–2017 13-inch Pros)
• Anti-reflective coating peeling in patches (staingate on older Retina models)

Tip from our technicians: The most common cause of MacBook screen cracks we see is closing the lid on earbuds, a pen or a charging cable. The glass is only a few millimetres from the keyboard, so even a small object cracks it.

Can a cracked MacBook screen be repaired, or does it need replacement?

On every MacBook from 2012 onward, the cover glass and the LCD panel are fused together. Once the glass cracks, the panel underneath is usually damaged too, and the crack spreads with every open-and-close. Replacing the display assembly is the only lasting fix. Anyone offering to “change just the glass” on a modern MacBook is usually fitting a lower-quality part.
