A MacBook usually gives warning signs before it fails completely: a battery that drains by lunchtime, a key that repeats, a screen that flickers when you move the lid. As a result, catching these signs early often turns an expensive MacBook repair into a small one.

This Apple laptop repair guide explains the most common MacBook problems we see in our Delhi and Ghaziabad workshops, what usually causes them, what you can safely try at home, and when it is time to get your MacBook repaired.

Quick answer: can you repair a MacBook?

Yes, a technician can repair most MacBook problems instead of replacing the whole laptop. Battery drain, sticky keys, a trackpad that won’t click, charging faults, screen damage and many logic board faults all have a repair fix, often costing a fraction of a new MacBook. Try the simple checks in this guide first, then get a free diagnosis to confirm the real fault. For a full price list, see our guide to MacBook repair cost in India.

Before any MacBook repair: do these 3 things

  1. Back up your data. If the Mac still turns on, use Time Machine or iCloud. Most repairs don’t touch your files. Even so, a backup protects you if the storage itself is failing.
  2. Note your model number. Turn the MacBook over and find the number starting with “A” near the hinge (for example A2337), or open Apple menu › About This Mac. This matters because repair prices depend on it.
  3. Write down when the problem started. Mention any drop, spill, macOS update or new charger. As a result, a technician can find the real fault faster.

1. MacBook screen problems

Screen damage is the most expensive common MacBook repair. However, not every display fault needs a full MacBook screen replacement, and a technician can often fix a MacBook screen by repairing the cable or backlight.

  • Cracked or broken display (MacBook Pro or Air): the LCD panel has broken, so it needs a new panel or display. Also, ink-like black or purple patches spread over time.
  • Lines or flickering: often a display cable or connector fault, and a technician can usually fix it without a new screen.
  • Black screen while the Mac is running: connect an external monitor. If the picture appears there, then the problem is in the display, backlight or cable.
  • Stage-light effect on 2016–2017 MacBook Pro: this is “flexgate”, a known display cable fault. Therefore, replacing the cable costs far less than a new screen.
Try first: restart, raise the brightness, and test with an external monitor.

Cost: display cable repair costs from ₹5,499. MacBook screen replacement cost in India ranges from ₹6,499 to ₹37,999 depending on the model. For example, MacBook Air M1 screen replacement starts at ₹9,999, while MacBook Pro display replacement costs more because of the XDR panel. See MacBook screen repair for model-wise prices.

2. MacBook battery draining fast

Apple rates modern MacBook batteries for about 1,000 charge cycles. After that, capacity drops and, as a result, the Mac may shut down without warning.

Signs: “Service Recommended” in System Settings › Battery › Battery Health, shutdowns at 20–30%, or under an hour of use unplugged.

Warning: if the trackpad stops clicking or the bottom case lifts, the battery may be swollen. In that case, stop using the MacBook straight away, because a swollen battery is a safety risk.
Try first: check the cycle count in System Information › Power, and close apps using heavy energy in Activity Monitor.

Cost: MacBook battery replacement cost starts at ₹2,499, with a 6-month warranty. The MacBook battery price depends on the model, so a MacBook Pro battery replacement usually costs more than a MacBook Air battery replacement.

3. MacBook keyboard not working

Sticky, repeating or dead keys are common on MacBooks with the butterfly keyboard (MacBook Pro 2016–2019 and MacBook Air 2018–2019) and after liquid spills.

Try first: hold the MacBook at a 75° angle and blow compressed air across the keys in short bursts. Also, check that no keyboard settings changed after a macOS update.

Cost: MacBook keyboard replacement from ₹1,999. Depending on the model, we replace a single key, the keyboard or, if needed, the top case.

4. MacBook trackpad not clicking

A trackpad that won’t click is often not a trackpad fault. Instead, a swollen battery often pushes up from underneath and stops the click. That is why a good technician always checks the battery first.

Try first: check System Settings › Trackpad, and restart.

Cost: MacBook trackpad repair from ₹1,999.

5. MacBook not charging

First, test the cheapest parts: a different charger, a different cable and a different USB-C port. In fact, many “not charging” cases are only a faulty adapter.

Try first: clean the port gently with a dry, soft brush, and try another wall socket. On Intel MacBooks, reset the SMC.

Cost: MacBook charging port replacement from ₹1,499. However, if the charging circuit on the logic board has failed, it needs a board repair instead.

6. MacBook not turning on

A MacBook that shows no sign of life can have a dead battery, a charging fault or a logic board problem.

Try first:

  1. Charge it for at least 30 minutes with a known-good charger.
  2. Hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, then press it again.
  3. On Apple silicon Macs, hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears. If it appears, the hardware is working and the fault is likely in macOS.

If it is stuck on the Apple logo instead, read our guide on MacBook stuck on the Apple logo.

Cost: MacBook logic board repair from ₹1,499. Before you pay the high price of a new Apple motherboard, ask whether chip-level repair is possible. Because chip-level repair replaces only the failed component, it costs far less than a new board.

7. Liquid spilled on a MacBook (water damage)

Liquid starts corroding the logic board within hours. For this reason, speed matters more than anything else.

Do this immediately:

  1. Shut it down and unplug it. Don’t try to switch it back on.
  2. Turn it upside down in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the board.
  3. Don’t use a hair dryer or rice. In fact, neither removes corrosion.
  4. Finally, take it to a technician for cleaning as soon as possible.

More detail: spilled water on your MacBook.

Cost: liquid damage repair from ₹1,899. If water has reached the display and left marks, MacBook screen water damage usually needs a display replacement.

8. MacBook overheating or slow

In most cases, dust, dried thermal paste and a nearly full SSD cause the heat, fan noise and slowdowns.

Try first: keep at least 10–15% of storage free, check Activity Monitor for apps using high CPU, and use the Mac on a hard, flat surface.

Cost: we quote for cleaning after a free diagnosis. An SSD upgrade from ₹2,499 is possible on older models with removable storage, such as the A1466, A1502 and A1398. However, newer MacBooks have storage soldered onto the logic board, so you can’t upgrade it.

Should you repair your MacBook or buy a new one?

Repair usually makes sense when the cost is well below the price of a replacement Mac and your model still gets macOS updates. For example, a ₹2,499 battery or ₹1,999 keyboard repair can add years of use to a MacBook that is otherwise fine.

On the other hand, replacement is worth considering when:

  • the repair costs more than about half the value of a similar used MacBook,
  • several major parts have failed at once, such as the screen and logic board, or
  • your model no longer receives macOS security updates.

Apple service centre or independent MacBook repair?

Apple / authorised service provider Independent repair (e.g. Buzzmeeh)
Best for Macs under warranty or AppleCare+ Out-of-warranty Macs
Parts Genuine Apple parts Choice of part grades, explained before repair
Repair approach Usually replaces whole assemblies Can repair single components, such as a chip or cable
Cost Higher Usually lower
Convenience Visit and drop off Doorstep repair or free pickup

Before anything else, if your MacBook is under Apple’s one-year warranty or AppleCare+, check with Apple first. The standard warranty covers manufacturing defects but not accidental damage, while AppleCare+ covers accidental damage for a service fee. For locations, see our list of Apple authorised service centres in Delhi.

How to choose a MacBook repair service

Ask these five questions before you hand over your MacBook:

  1. Will you diagnose the fault before quoting? Otherwise, a fixed price before diagnosis often means unnecessary parts.
  2. Which part grade will you use? Ask whether it is original, pulled from another Mac, or a compatible part.
  3. What warranty do I get, in writing?
  4. Will anyone access my data? A screen, battery or keyboard repair never needs your password.
  5. Can I see the repair, or get a job sheet? Doorstep repair or a sealed pickup with a written job sheet protects you.

MacBook repair FAQs

What are the most common MacBook problems?

The most common MacBook problems are fast battery drain, screen damage, sticky or repeating keys, a trackpad that won’t click, charging faults and liquid damage. Fortunately, a technician can fix most of them without replacing the MacBook.

How long does MacBook repair take?

Most MacBook repairs take 24 to 72 hours. However, a technician can often replace a battery or display assembly the same day when the part is in stock.

Can you repair a MacBook at home?

Yes. A technician can do many repairs, such as battery and full display replacement, at your home or office. However, board-level and liquid damage repairs need a workshop, so we collect the MacBook and return it after the repair.

Will I lose my data during MacBook repair?

Screen, battery, keyboard, trackpad and charging port repairs don’t touch your storage. Logic board and liquid damage repairs carry some risk, so back up first whenever the Mac still turns on.

Is it safe to use a MacBook with a swollen battery?

No. Instead, stop using it, don’t charge it, and replace the battery as soon as possible.

Can you repair a MacBook logic board instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Chip-level repair replaces only the failed component, such as a power IC, which costs much less than a new logic board.

Does third-party repair void my Apple warranty?

Opening a Mac that is still under Apple warranty can affect your coverage, so use Apple or an authorised provider while the warranty lasts. For out-of-warranty Macs, an independent repair has no warranty to lose.

Final word

Most MacBook problems give an early warning, and fixing them early is almost always cheaper. So, back up your data, note your model number, and try the simple checks in this guide first. Then, if the problem stays, a free diagnosis tells you exactly what has failed and what it will cost before any work starts.
