Xiaomi Mix 5 Leak Hints at Quad-Curved Display, Under-Display Camera, and 3D Face Unlock

Xiaomi appears to be preparing a comeback for its experimental Mix smartphone lineup with the much-rumoured Xiaomi Mix 5. According to recent leaks, the upcoming device could arrive before Apple’s iPhone 18 series, signalling Xiaomi’s renewed focus on design innovation and next-generation display technology. The Mix series has traditionally served as Xiaomi’s testing ground for futuristic concepts, and the Mix 5 is expected to continue that legacy by prioritising a truly seamless front experience.

Xiaomi Mix 5 Could Push Toward a Full-Screen Design

Tipster Digital Chat Station recently shared details on Weibo about an upcoming smartphone featuring a quad-curved display paired with an under-display selfie camera. In a separate post, the tipster also hinted at renewed interest in the Xiaomi Mix numbered series, fuelling speculation that these leaks refer to the Xiaomi Mix 5.

If accurate, the quad-curved screen design could enhance immersion while minimising bezels, reinforcing Xiaomi’s long-standing goal of delivering an uninterrupted front display without notches or punch-holes.

Under-Display 3D Face Recognition Could Be a First

Adding to the excitement, tipster Smart Pikachu has suggested that the Xiaomi Mix 5 may support under-display 3D facial recognition. Should this feature reach a commercial device, Xiaomi could become the first brand to introduce under-display 3D face unlock. This technology would mark a significant advancement over current under-display cameras, which are still limited in image quality and sensor performance.

Possible Launch at Lei Jun’s Annual Keynote

The Xiaomi Mix 5 is rumoured to debut at Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun’s annual keynote, an event typically reserved for the company’s most important and technology-driven products. A launch at this stage would highlight the strategic importance of the Mix 5 within Xiaomi’s long-term innovation roadmap.

A Return After Nearly Four Years

Xiaomi last updated the Mix lineup with the Xiaomi Mix 4 in August 2021. That model introduced Xiaomi’s first under-display selfie camera and a ceramic unibody design, powered by the Snapdragon 888+ chipset. While it showcased bold innovation, the under-display camera struggled to match conventional selfie cameras in quality.

With the Mix 5, Xiaomi appears ready to revisit the concept, potentially armed with more mature under-display and biometric technologies. If the leaks prove accurate, the Xiaomi Mix 5 could once again position Xiaomi at the forefront of experimental smartphone design.
